All over the Garden State for the second day, tempetures are expected to be in the ninties with some areas to go in excess of 100 degrees.  With high humity in place it is going to be unbearably hot.

People should take extra precautions, not spending extended periods outdoors whenever possible, drink plenty of water to combat dehydration and wear light clothing.

Extra precautions should be taken with children that may not show outward signs of fatigue and dehydration as quickly or worse until the situation is dangerously critical.

With energy prices at all time highs, some things that you can do to both keep your house cool, while keeping your energy costs as low as possible include:

  • Turn off unnecessary lights.
  • Close blinds, shades and drapes to reduce the amount of sunlight entering your home.
  • Use room fans, ceiling fans and attic whole-house fans to circulate air.
  • Avoid using home appliances like dishwashers and clothes dryers during peak daylight hours. These appliances generate heat and add humidity to homes. Save such jobs for the early morning or late evening when it is generally cooler.
  • Keep your thermostat set at a constant comfortable level (75 - 78 degrees).
  • Place window air conditioners on the north or shady side of the house  to avoid overworking the unit in the hot daytime sun.
